Every time a student of mine would use the r-word to denigrate another kid, even in fun, Id tell them about my stepson, CJ. Often my students would get very quiet, and sometimes cry, as I described the ignorant and mean things other kids would do to CJ at school. After making it very clear that I would not allow the use of the r-word EVER, a few students would feel safe enough to share that they, too, had a family member with a developmental disability. We are grateful to many of CJs peers at Bullard High School, and later at Fresno City College, who took the time to get to know him. They were able to see an amazing person who happened to be born with a condition called autism. By the way, CJ is at this very moment training for the Special Olympics in swimming. He was chosen to compete in the National Special Olympics in New Jersey this summer. We love him very much.
