Everyone assumes that glaciers lose mass at their bottoms, where temperatures are warmer. But ice cores extracted from the tops of various different Himalayan glaciers suggest that mass is being lost at high altitudes, too: chemical traces in the stratified layers of the cores -- which can be dated and associated with specific historic events -- seem to be missing the last few decades, which means that the top lof the ice has been lost. nature/news/tibetan-glaciers-are-shrinking-at-their-summits-1.13767?WT.mc_id=FBK_NatureNews
