Everyone blowing this whole FB messenger app permission thing out of the water.... Here is a simple explanation as to why they need/have the permissions they do. 1. Giving it permission to use phone and phone numbers allows it to connect with people who share their phone number on Facebook. Because Facebook is integrated into most devices now, you can sync contact with Facebook therefore making it convenient to call people directly from the app itself. If you have Skype then you already allow this to one app. 2. Because it is now its own messaging app it needs permission to read your text messages. If you are using any 3rd party messaging app like GoSMS or Handcent you have given the same permission to those apps as well. Dont believe me go look. 3. All the other permission are the same permissions you give to GMail, Twitter, Instagram, and even the Bible app. Now you could Root your device, unlock the bootloader, install a custom rom, and block permissions... but that would require some research about your phone and what it actually does and can do.
