Everyone has an opinion on football and what makes it such a great sport. Maybe you’re confused when other people enjoy spending entire weekend days glued to their television screens watching football games or braving the cold on a Friday night with nothing but your emotions and a cup of hot chocolate. If youve never delved into the world of football at Dooley Field, never experienced the gut wrenching chills of a rivalry game, you better grab something to hold on to. Whether you’re a player, coach or a fan, football is all about nights like tonight. Being a part of a big game in an exciting atmosphere is what you play for. It’s what Yellow Jackets live for. There’s a universal truth in sports. If there’s one team you love above all others, there’s one team you despise above all others, too. Tonight is no different. On this Friday night, neighbors become like the Hatfield’s and the McCoy’s. Proximity. It’s a border war. You know it’s special when you can feel a rivalry in your blood - the excitement, the joy, the anger. Nothing lights a fire under a football game like a good rivalry. Trash gets talked, battle lines get drawn and bleachers fill fast when teams with a history meet. Among the things that make a good high school rivalry are proximity and competitiveness. A good rivalry brings a sense of purpose. Sometimes a game is just a game, but a rivalry is an event. The crowds swell and players get amped when two rival schools with a competitive history line up against each other. Whether two teams are scratching for that extra bit of respect, two communities are clawing for supremacy or two fan bases are fighting for a deeper carving in sports lore, these illustrious rivalries shadow our sports passion with their memorable match ups. Rivalries have always exhilarated players and sent fans into frenzies, but never cease to create neighborly disdain. Few games draw the kinds of crowds that Greer vs. Blue Ridge does. Fans fill up the stadium long before game time with thousands ringing the perimeter. Heated screams across the hallowed Bermuda turf skim across the celestial “G” likes stones on a pond. Ah, the sweetness of a big rivalry. A football rivalry like this might not be a big deal to some; it may just be another game. But if you’re a Jacket Backer, I assure you it’s much more than that. The numbers, headlines and past games don’t matter when these two teams take the field. It’s Halloween. It’s Greer and the school off Fews Chappel Rd. The Jackets will be in no mood for trick or treating tonight. Epic. Indelible. Chaotic. Welcome to Dooley Field, little tiger. GO JACKETS!
