Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control. Motherhood and childhood are entitled to special care and assistance. All children, whether born in or out of wedlock, shall enjoy the same social protection. ~ From the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This document has been around for decades, and yet there has been little if any progress made toward supporting this right. Why? Fear of lazy people and allowing the rich to get richer without limits. Neither of these, in my humble opinion, make any sense at all. Even lazy people want more in their lives than the mere basics of food, clothing, housing, etc., so providing these things puts society at little risk of large numbers of lazy people taking advantage of us. There are some people who find it extremely difficult or impossible to work, and these are lumped in with lazy people by some folks, mostly our latter day conservatives. So a good fraction of lazy people really need help. The Welfare Queens of the 1980s are few and far between. The fact is, we spend more money determining eligibility for welfare than it would cost us if some Lazy people took advantage of us. Having seen people fall through the cracks in recent years, hard working and intelligent people, I have come to the conclusion that provision of the basics in industrialized countries is doable, and a responsibility in civilized society. Everyone should have these provided for the asking without strings attached.
