Ex-players to honour 96 Last Updated: 18:48 13/03/14 Vinny OConnor reports from Liverpool on a special game arranged to mark the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster. On Monday April 21 a packed Anfield will celebrate the lives of the 96 victims of the Hillsborough disaster. Kenny Dalglish will take charge of a team of local reds against Gerard Houlliers international Liverpool Legends. Players already confirmed include Jamie Carragher, Robbie Fowler, John Barnes, Steve McManaman, Ian Rush, Dietmar Hamann, Jan Molby and Luis Garcia. To announce the event Steven Gerrard and Kenny Dalglish accompanied Margaret Aspinall, Chair of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, at a Melwood News Conference. Its not just about the celebrities who have supported us, the club as well has been absolutely fantastic to the families, said Margaret Aspinall as she showed her gratitude for the help shes received since her son, James, died in the tragedy. And the support weve had from the fans and survivors right to this day, we cant thank them enough, she continued, and we hope they continue to show their support on April 21. The presence of their club captain and Kenny Dalglish reaffirmed Liverpool Football Clubs support for the families of the 96. Twenty-five years ago when our supporters were in a bit of trouble it was our turn as a football club to show our support to them, said Dalglish who, 25 years ago, accompanied by his wife Marina, attended four funerals in one day as Liverpool mourned those lost in the disaster. The football club has always been close to its supporters and that will never change. Whilst not playing, Steven Gerrard and his team mates will be there on what he hopes will be an inspiring night. The Liverpool Captain, who donated £96,000 to the Hillsborough Family Support Group in January, lost his 10 year old cousin Jon-Paul Gilhooley at Hillsborough. I think what is important is to keep it on everyones minds just how important it is and everyone continues to show the fantastic support that theyve done for many years, he said. But after this occasion, if the team can use that as a bit of inspiration to finish the season strong then lets hope that happens as well. Dalglish promised that, while the players on show may be past their prime, the desire to win will be as strong as ever. Charity games have certainly never dulled his competitive instincts! The money raised on the night will be split equally between the Hillsborough Family Support Group and the Liverpool Foundation.
