Exactly two weeks to the day after Aloha, Elvis walked out on - TopicsExpress

Exactly two weeks to the day after Aloha, Elvis walked out on stage to begin his eighth Las Vegas season. This opening night show would feature a virtually identical setlist to that in the Honolulu International Center except that Until Its Time For You To Go and Sweet Caroline would be included and Welcome To My World discarded and this would pretty much be the pattern for the entire season. In 2012 FTD released the CD From Hawaii to Las Vegas which focused on Elvis preperations for the aforementioned Vegas season and had been recorded using a basic cassette recorder, probably for the benefit of Elvis to iron out any problems he could identify from the tape. To this end the album featured an almost complete dress rehearsal from 25 January 1973, on the eve of opening night. What is fascinating about this is that this stage rehearsal also had an almost identical setlist to Aloha with a couple of fascinating exceptions. Bridge Over Troubled Water was included but as Elvis often sang this that on its own is unremarkable but the inclusion of Faded Love and this song, Seperate Ways certainly is. Most of us will understand the personal significance of this song to Elvis considering when it was recorded and that it was written by Red West after Elvis split with Priscilla. Here we have two seperate versions sang one after the other on the stage of the Hiltons main showroom, first Elvis does it with the band only and then a full run out with orchestral accompaniment. Both versions are excellent but the strings add a considrable degree of poignancy and it is regrettable that Elvis decided to drop the song completely - why perform it, and it works so well, only to drop it before opening night? https://youtube/watch?v=1A4KlPoIR4s
