Excellent overview from Steven Levy on how Google search has evolved so dramatically over the past three years -- and in ways that people might not have noticed. Two quibbles. Hummingbird actually didnt produce major ranking changes, which was remarkable given it was essentially Google rebuilding its entire search engine from the ground-up. No one noticed, but it prepared the foundation for Gooogle to build on for the next decade. Also, Facebook didnt quite block Google from gathering its social signals. Google could have them, if it wanted to agree to Facebooks terms, to my understanding -- which would have involved Facebook having insight into Google Search, as it might with any API partner. Google didnt want to do that. Overall, a great piece -- take the time to read it.
