Excerpt from After Hours Short Story by C.L.McCue “You know my name.” “How could I forget it?” “Well, I don’t think we’d made any memories,” I said, knowing I’d made many in my mind. But there was nothing, nothing real to rationalize his words. “Do you know how many times I mentioned your name to the guys I hung out with and …” “And what?” Our eyes locked, arresting our movement. “Well, you were a junior so they discouraged me.” He stepped in closer. “Too young, you know, for that age.” I had a lightbulb moment, one that was burning out, disappointment curdling my stomach. I slid my hand over my belly for comfort. “We could have been friends?” My voice tipped low. “Impossible for me.” “Right, sorry.” I turned away to place the cleaned glasses. “You didn’t want to get to know me, you just wanted me.” He snickered and I felt a grip around my bicep. I swiveled to face him. “That’s not it, Kris.” He blinked with surprise at his own words. “Can I call you Kris?” His hand tightened, before falling to his side.
