Excerpt from todays Observer The vote, by my math, will be 5 to 2, with Kenneth Edge, Marshall Faircloth, Billy King, Charles Evans and Ed Melvin against, and a frustrated Jimmy Keefe and Council in minority. I must have had hundreds of calls from citizens out in Cedar Creek, Melvin says. Im a firm believer, no matter if you represent the county or the city or the state, you remember theyre the ones who put you there. Thats whats wrong today with Raleigh and Washington. Im not against a chicken plant. Im against the location, and I owed it to them. King and Faircloth have listened to residents, too, and Evans apparently doesnt buy into a 40 percent turnover rate at Sandersons Kinston plant, or its wage of $11.71 an hour. Edge, Im told, is troubled over environmental issues. A reprieve for the poultry plant could be Glenn Adams, who won a May primary to replace King. And equally, the two survivors for at-large seats in a race among Larry Lancaster, Juanita Gonzalez, Michael Boose and Evans in the Nov. 4 elections to replace Melvin, who is not seeking another term. So, a cock a doodle doo for now as the roosters crow this sunrise, and folks down Cedar Creek way, too. Comment: A couple of issues with this article. First of all according to both Mayor Nat Robertson and Pic Billingsley from Sanderson the plans are still moving forward. We dont have anything to crow about. This is not over by a long shot. Even if Sanderson does officially pull out there is still no reason to crow. We will be crowing like crazy if the county can get some businesses into the Cedar Creek business center that will help improve not only the employment rate but also the entire Fayetteville community. The type of businesses that were originally envisioned when the park was built. As it was put by the orignal designers of the Business Center: Someone has said Perceived quality of life is the most important criteria for corporate locators these days, especially in high tech. The Cedar Creek Business Center will establish a quality of life for work and relaxation that can go a long way in changing the word perceived to actual and make our Cedar Creek Business Center the desired location. When that happens, and it will someday. That is when Cedar Creek will be crowing. In the meantime IF it turns out that Sanderson locates elsewhere we will be glad, not just for Cedar Creek but for the long term future of both Fayetteville and Cumberland County.
