Exciting event for the people of Waterford! Friday 20 June, 3:30pm, New Street. Admission Free. “A Moving Experience” You are invited to a treat in the new garden in New Street on Friday June 20th. President Michael D. Higgins will be coming to Waterford to launch Wikid - a music and arts festival for families and children in celebration of Waterford’s 1100th birthday. As part of his visit, the president will also open the new garden in New Street (behind the old News & Star office on Michael Street). There will be an open air stage in the garden and the Waterford Academy of Music & Arts (WAMA) has been asked to perform for him during his visit. As part of this honor, WAMA will be presenting a set of Irish traditional music on the lead up to the Presidents arrival on stage, followed by a 15 minute excerpt from ‘Poetry in Motion’ - a dance show collaboration between local poet Mark Roper, and three Waterford dance troupes; Traces Dance Ensemble, WAMA, and WYDMoves Youth Dance. The President has a love of Irish music and poetry and admires Marks work, so this will be a very fitting piece! ABOUT Poetry In Motion An enchanting and unique dance experience, suitable for all ages, ‘Poetry in Motion’ is an evocative programme of contemporary dance in response to a selection of Mark Roper’s inspirational poems. This performance will be a representation of the ‘Poetry in Motion’ production previously staged at Garter Lane Theatre earlier in 2014. The Cast comprises Traces Dance Ensemble led by Libby Seward, dancers from Waterford Academy of Music & Arts with Trish Murphy and WYDmoves Youth Dance with Becci Whelan. The three choreographers weave together a seamless fusion of movement and music while Mark Roper reads from his collections Even So: New & Selected Poems (2008), A Gather of Shadow (2012), The River Book (2010) and The Backstrand (2013). https://youtube/watch?v=KzHcQcjCn6s ABOUT: Waterford Academy of Music & Arts (WAMA) The Waterford Academy of Music & Arts (WAMA) hosts a range of art disciplines, from drama and dance to music and art.
