Exclusive interview with Rina Dhaka at ICW 2014 1. What defines the label Rina Dhaka? My label is a representation of ideas, a reflection of my absorption over time of things I have learnt, my knowledge of my craft, my inferences whether contemporary or historic, and yes form, fit and innovation. Fashion is the language of my expressions. 2. How much research goes into a collection? Does it begin with a typical inspiration or a germ of an idea? One must do his/her homework right to frame something better and different, therefore, we all have the inspirations to look up. The Indian history inspires me, theres nothing complete without a good groundwork research and inspiration; both are finely complementary. 3. How has the countrys sense of fashion changed over the years? There has been a dynamic transition that has overpowered and dictated the fashion quotient of the country. Theres a change in peoples choices, theres more awareness towards comfort as well as style. 4. You have been quoted saying, Punjab fascinates me, How and why? Yes, Punjab is inspiring especially from the point of phulkari , crotchet and its jersey industry , and I have used it as that for two of my shows on Fox Traveller , called Style and The City. And, Punjabi tradition has many layers to explore and put it across in your fashion. 5. Who do you think is the most style (man and woman) in Bollywood today? Its a gigantic task to pick and choose one out of many that I have worked with. But, I would say, Malaika Arora, as she pulls-off every style effortlessly. This is also why I have worked with her in the India Couture Week, 2014 (she was one of the showstoppers, aside from Nimrat Kaur). 6. Which international celebrity you would like to dress up and why? I have styled Naomi Campbell... she has got an amazing personality. 7. How much do runway shows and exhibitions (here and abroad) translate to real buyers? You see, both are different entities, exhibitions majorly are for the real buyers, theirs is real price; more about clothing, and especially ready to wear garments. On the contrary, runway shows focus on bookings and promotions. There is a huge amount of endorsing associated with it. 8. One trend thats big this season. I think, it would be baggies (pants), and colourful bags. The reason why baggie pants are a huge trend this season is because it blends comfort and style perfectly. 9. You have created an exclusive line for Nokia Lumia, how much of a role does technology play in your everyday life and profession? The technology is crucial for all. People use it on the go...The brand fit my aesthetic sense, amalgamating style with technology and thats what I did through my collection too. 10. Indian fashion industry with respect to the global market. Your comments. You need to understand the uniqueness and divergence of Indian market and Western market, and then classify the sense of fashion. One could witness a change in the global fashion, multi-cultural approach and exposure to varied cultures has shrunk the economy. But still, Indian wear and Western wear are two different fashion lines altogether. 11. Tell us about your recent collection launched at the India Couture Week. In this collection, I have revisited the traditional gota patti element, and placed it against tinsel sheers and lace. My India Couture Week, 2014 collection is inspired by the brilliant gota work of Rajasthan; like I said earlier, Indian history has lot more options to dive in.
