Excuse “Davros” for regressing to his childhood, but there is - TopicsExpress

Excuse “Davros” for regressing to his childhood, but there is a purpose to my ramblings. When I was a young boy in Los Angeles at that start of the 1950’s I watched on that new medium, black and white 11 inch television, the following examples of Science Fiction. There was Buzz Corey, the actual model for “Buzz Light Year”, Commander and Chief of “The Space Patrol”, “Captain Video and his Video Rangers” which I of course was one, “Tom Corbett, Space Cadet” in a form of 3-D, “Commando Cody Sky Marshall of the Universe” with a very young Leonard Nimoy as a Martian and “Flash Gordon” actually shot in the ruins of West Berlin with an American/West German cast. My SciFi movies had titles such as: “Destination Moon”, “Flight to Mars”, “Cat Women of the Moon”, “Red Planet Mars” and “This Island Earth”. When we played Cowboys and Indians I had my genuine “Lone Ranger Six Shooters” and when we needed a rifle, or a horse for that matter there always was Mom’s broom. When we played World War 2 and eventually the Korean War where three of my Uncles were in. That broom was now a bazooka, or M-1. Today when kids the age I was then play the same games their toy guns look so real they have to have an orange piece of plastic at the end of the barrel. Reason: kids are accidently shot and killed, because these toys look to real which would never have happened with my “Lone Ranger” six shooters or my genuine “Flash Gordon Ray Gun”. It would be three and a half years after “Dr. Who” premiered until Neil Armstrong and his crew proved two things. First the Moon really wasn’t made of green cheese and second to my sadness there really were no “Catwomen” in ballet dresses living there. Which finally brings me to the purpose of this posting and my question to the group. Since I joined this Fan Group and up until two days ago I have noticed, mainly from those unfamiliar with the Doctor prior to 2005, comments that call the original shows “Cheap and Silly” which are legitimate statements as the show has changed in certain elements as technology improved. So; My first question how do you think the changes in technology may, or may not have changed the show? Is not a Dalek a Dalek and a TARDIS a TARDIS? Do you think we may have lost to some extant our imagination and the sense of wonder the audiences felt on November 23, 1963? Have we become too familiar to the cast of villains? Do they even fit in the 21st Century? I for one say they do, but------ Could one of the problems some “Whoovian’s” are experiencing with Steven Moffat’s story versus say Terrence Dicks is that instead, for example, of wondering what it was like on the Moon when the show premiered in 1963 we know what it is like? So the Doctor is going, pardon the pun, “Where no TARDIS has gone before”. Do you think this change makes the stories more believable, or are we still in a World of pure escapism? Are these newer stories really any different from the old? As they referred to the Fishing Boat Skipper in the classic Ray Harryhaussen film: “The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms” you may believe “Davros” is a little bit “Balmy” over this and surely long winded. However, I like a good discussion and the fact that some on this page seem to locked on the last three Doctors over the rest makes me want to know WHY as THE DOCTOR IS STILL THE DOCTOR.---Davros---
