Exercise and Cognitive Function Exercise plays many vital roles - TopicsExpress

Exercise and Cognitive Function Exercise plays many vital roles in maintaining high levels of physical health. Many of these benefits provide tangible, quantitative measurements which help to assess improvements. An improvement more qualitative in nature, and far more difficult to assess, would be the psychological health improvements gained by exercise. Many people have stated that exercise helps clear the mind and relieve stress, in turn allowing for enhanced thought processes. Although these claims are anecdotal in nature, current research may prove them to be more fact than fiction. A recent study published in Frontiers in Human Performance (2013), provided some insight as to the effect of exercise on cognitive function. Two major thought processes believed to contribute to creative activities are divergent thinking and convergent thinking. Divergent thinking is described as formulating many solutions around a single given problem or idea. For example, the study presented the subjects with a pen, and asked them to generate as many uses of the object as possible. Convergent thinking is the exact opposite, many problems are given, in which a single solution must be derived. Convergent thinking is the more difficult of the two, and relies on high accuracy and logic. For example, the study presented the subjects with three unrelated words (“time, hair, and stretch”) and asked them to identify a common associate (“long”). Participants were asked to perform both the divergent and convergent tasks during and post exercise. Results of the study demonstrated that with divergent thinking tasks, all participants performed better during the post exercise rest than during exercise. The convergent thinking tasks showed some improvements in athletes (3.4 training sessions per week) even during moderate and intense exercise, but not in non-athletes (0.5 training sessions per week). Personal trainers should be able to use the results of this study when communicating the...
