Exeter Citys time in the league cup is curtailed at the first - TopicsExpress

Exeter Citys time in the league cup is curtailed at the first round hurdle once again, as a relentless AFC Bournemouth found enough to beat the host by two goals to nil. Reasonably comfortable at half time, City looked to have the visitors under control, with both Christy Pym and on one occasion the post being the unbeatable last line in a very solid defence. However, Eddie Howes decision to switch the menacing Junior Stanislas to the right hand side of the pitch in the second spell proved to be the evenings master stroke, as both goals came from his right boot. Until the 54th minute, City had continued their resolute display, but the pace of the cross, and a rare error from Scot Bennett, saw the ball canon off the skippers shins beyond the scrambling Pym. City looked to press for an equaliser, but when another Stanislas cross fired into the danger-zone and was ultimately turned in by former Plymouth Argyle, Everton and Newcastle midfielder, Dan Gosling, the game was up. This is not to say that City did not contest, but tonight was one of those when good fortune was in short supply, none more so than when Nichols turned the ball against the post in the final minute of the game. In the end, City gave a good account of themselves against a side which finished over two divisions above them last season. On another positive note, some of the young lads have done their reputations no harm tonight, in particular Pym and Tillson who were absolutely superb. The capital one cup adventure may be over for another year, but the season has just begun, and next up is a little trip to the Cornish border! Full match report to follow...
