Exodus 20:3 KJV [3] Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Romans 1:25 KJV [25] Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. 1 Corinthians 10:14 KJV [14] Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry. 1 John 5:21 KJV [21] Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen. Weve all heard the word idolatry...but, when we hear it, do we automatically think golden calf or literal worship of other gods. Lets first look at the definition of the word. Extreme admiration, love, or reverence for something or someone other than God. So...lets look at some possible idols in our lives that perhaps we havent recognized. Idolatry comes in many forms. What about pleasure? Can pleasure be an idol? Are you constantly desiring more of something? Do you struggle with contentment and satisfaction? Always wanting bigger and better? Would that not be an extreme admiration? Ok...we all have smart phones. I have a problem with constantly checking my phone. An iPhone can become an idol if were not careful. If we become obsessed with checking notifications, its a problem! Ok...what about our bodies? Now, dont get me wrong. Exercise and healthy eating is certainly necessary for our health and our bodies are a temple and we should take care of the residing place of The Holy Spirit....but, it can be taken in the form of idolatry. If we become obsessed with how we look, it becomes an extreme admiration. Right?? What about our spouse or our children? Lets remember their Creator and praise God for them. We need to be careful not to confuse love for our family with worship? Theres a fine line. How bout your favorite sport? Auburn and Alabama football is a huge idol in the South. Nothing wrong with cheering on your favorite team...as long as your not consumed by it. We could go on and on. I guarantee you that there is something in your life that poses the threat of idolatry. You may not even realize it. Satan is clever. He knows our weaknesses and he will use them against us. The only way to prevent idolatry in our lives is to make Jesus our constant focus. One day a week isnt enough. We need to seek Him in everything we do, and if He doesnt mix with the places we are going or the people were around...then guess what?! We shouldnt either! Deuteronomy 30:17-18 KJV [17] But if thine heart turn away, so that thou wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them; [18] I denounce unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish...... God bless and happy Monday yall!!!
