Will we have reasoned discussion of this issue in the coming year? While the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. advocated passive resistance as a means of public protest, he never advocated resisting arrest. And he did not see police officers as enemies to be eliminated. To interpret the civil rights movement as a green light for lawlessness is to misread it completely. Thus the author of this article argues that people do not have the right to resist arrest. Can everyone agree on this point, at least?
