Expecting a baby doesnt mean you have to give up exercising. In fact, a gentle prenatal yoga practice may even help prepare you for the birthing process by reducing anxiety and stress. Melissa Smith, Registered Yoga Alliance Teacher and author of the new Pregnancy Yoga, a Simple Illustrated Guide to Self Practice for Both Pre and Post Natal, swears by prenatal yoga, Combined with other activities, it has helped me prepare for childbirth by strengthening my muscles, and building endurance. Usually, you can resume your yoga practice 4-6 weeks after a natural birth, or 8-12 weeks if youve had a cesarean. Always check with your doctor before resuming exercise. Smith, a fitness instructor for over 17 years, also credits yoga for getting back into shape more easily after the birth of her children. She conducts pregnancy yoga classes at Fit For 2 and with her newly published illustrated guide for pregnancy yoga, she hopes to reach out to more women about the benefits of yoga during and after pregnancy and the importance of staying physically active. I wanted to create something fun and easy to use for my pre and post natal students, says Smith. Teaching at Fit For 2 for the past three years has been a fantastic experience and the guide allows me to give something unique to my students and encourage them to continue their practice at home.
