Exploring Our Humanness Through Our Bodies: Emotional Blocks - Our UnspokenTruths The body is an amazing organism, intelligently designed by the conscious universe, in the most optimal way to support our physical and emotional reality. While we all carry ourselves in a familiar shell and interior, each body holds subtle deviations due to lifes unique physical and emotional circumstances. Years of conditioning, habitual patterns and physical traumas and limitations create emotional blocks throughout our bodies. Blocks, acting as armor, prevent us from experiencing our full range of feelings. We numb our bodies as children in places where we dont want to feel; perhaps from pain in the form of abuse, neglect or shame, invasive medical treatment or injury. We shape our bodies to respond with new form to fit social and cultural expectations. We are chameleon and amateurs warriors fighting for the survival of our fragile psyche. The outcome is trapped emotions. The other outcome is the shutting down of new feelings meant to elevate us; to be experienced in critical places through out the territory of our flesh. As a result our growth stagnates. It is a jumble of unserved and unmanifested potential. Our humanness craves real pleasure and aliveness. The spectrum of fear and love, as dimensions of the human experience, is vast and serves to guide our growth and self-realization. We can consciously open these emotional blocks through purposeful body work: breath work, energy work, movement and asanas. For me this has been yoga and improvised dance. The path to opening my blocks has not been easy for me; undesirable emotions resurfaced. Uneasiness. Unconscious emotions crept out. Body was speaking to mind; mind panicked, mind thanked the body, but mind also fought with the body and body refused to cooperate. Without having the tools to work with this experience, the new awareness took time to process and settle. Opening channels suppressed with unconscious habit is hard work; its easier never doing the work that is painful, confusing and shameful. Pain tells us that our emotional or physical state needs to change, while confusion helps us sort the schemas of conflicting knowledge. Any of this work can lead us to confront our deepest shame: our sense of inadequacies, when we doubt ourselves and why we occupy this Earthly space. Its natural for us to run from and avoid confronting our shadow. Once we find that light in our shadow we light our path ahead. Our bodies, the witness to all our experiences, know our deepest secrets. We can trust our bodies with these secrets. We can confide in our bodies. Our bodies tell us our truths- truths that will make us uncomfortable and truths that will make us freer to live in our full potential. Truths guiding us to let go of what does not serve us. Instructing how to rebuild in order to move forward. Our bodies tell us stories. Listening is our choice. Living is our responsibility. Photos courtesy of Jennifer Hudson Fine Art
