Eyeing votes, govt trying to get real estate bill passed With an eye on middle-class voters ahead of Lok Sabha polls, the UPA government is pushing hard to get the real estate bill passed in the current session of Parliament. Congress general secretary and former housing minister Ajay Maken on Sunday met Sharad Yadav, chairman of the standing committee of Parliament which is considering the long pending legislation to protect home buyers. The Real Estate (Regulation & Development) Bill, 2013, which was introduced in Rajya Sabha last year, will provide relief to millions of home buyers and tighten the screws on unscrupulous builders. Maken, along with a delegation of apartment buyers/owners of Noida Extension, Gurgaon and Ghaziabad, met Yadav and requested him to table the committees report in Lok Sabha on Monday, so that it could be taken up with authorities concerned and the bill passed in the current session. Maken said Yadav had assured him that the report would be tabled on Monday and thereafter, he would try to get the bill taken up for discussion and passing by requesting the government as well as opposition leaders. The legislation, which talks of protection for home buyers and punishment for erring private developers, was opposed by the builders lobby. If cleared by Parliament, private builders will have to sell apartments on the basis of built-up area and not on ambiguous super area. They have to put all project details on the website of real estate regulators and can get money from buyers only after taking all necessary clearances.
