FATHER POLIARNY DELIVERED INVOCATION PRAYER AT THE CITY OF CHICAGO COUNCIL MEETING On the invitation of the Alderman Maldonado and through the efforts of the Ukrainian Community leaders Very Reverend Victor Poliarny was asked to deliver the invocation prayer at the start of the meeting, and he shared the following information. Honorable Mayor of the City of Chicago, Mayor Rahm Emanuel Clerk of the City Council, Ms. Susana Mendoza Members of the City Council of Chicago Honorable General Consul of Ukraine in Chicago, Andiy Pravednyk Community Members In November of 2013, the Ukrainian people - Christians, Jews and Moslems - demonstrated their will to join the West by peacefully gathering on the Maidan in Kyiv in unprecedented numbers. A brutal response from the corrupt government followed, resulting in the death of more than one hundred Ukrainians and thousands more injured –to be known as the REVOLUTION OF DIGNITY. In May this year, elections were held and a new president – Petro Poroshenko was elected; the Ukrainian nation anticipated the beginning of a long awaited process of reform in path towards the European Union. In response, Russia, the perpetual enemy and oppressor of Ukraine, began an undeclared war against Ukraine using terrorist surrogates to occupy Crimea and Eastern Ukraine. Ukraine’s sovereignty, violated by these Russian-backed terrorists, was countered by a quickly assembled anti-terrorist organization. The Russian sponsored terrorist invasion of Eastern Ukraine reached un-thinkable proportions when terrorists used missiles to shoot down Malaysian Airlines flight 17, carrying 298 innocent people comprised of different nationalities, among them 80 children. We mourn this senseless loss of innocent lives. During the past twelve months, Ukraine has struggled to define itself as a free, sovereign and democratic state, while aspiring to join the European Union. Today, the battle for Ukraine’s sovereignty and dignity of its people continues. In addition, at stake is the preservation of richly multiethnic territory which encompasses multiple histories – among them Ukrainian, Jewish, Polish, Soviet, Hapsburg, and Ottaman. The world understands that the fate of Europe hinges on the outcome of the Ukrainian struggle against Russian invaders. The Ukrainian community in the United States is very thankful to the people of the United States and Chicago for their help and support of Ukraine during these difficult times. And we continue to pray for Divine Intervention for peace, brotherly love and liberty in our beloved countries of the United States of America and Ukraine, we ask, O Merciful God, give eternal rest to the souls of those that sacrificed their lives in the defense of our liberties both in the United States and in Ukraine. Guide with your wisdom those that control world policies, grant them courage and devotion so that their plans and actions may be purified and strengthened for the Peace of the World. Illuminate the darkness of the minds of our adversaries, so that they may see your light, think your thoughts, and serve your glory by advancing true democracy for the greater good of all people. With your Divine Might protect our countries of the United States of America and Ukraine. And we commend to your gracious care and keeping men and women who serve in the armed forces of our countries. Defend them day by day with your heavenly shield; support them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face their fears; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence and Almighty and Merciful God bless the United States of America and bless Ukraine. Amen
