FEDERAL MINISTRY OF WORKS PRESS RELEASE President Goodluck Jonathan has reassured Nigerians, especially those of the South East and South South Geopolitical Zones that his administration will leave no stone unturned in the timely delivery of the 2nd bridge across the River Niger linking Delta and Anambra States. The President stated this while on inspection tour of the on-going construction works at the Asaba end and the Julius Berger Yard at the Onitsha end this weekend. President Jonathan expressed satisfaction at the level of work done so far considering the flag-off date of March 10, 2014. He was impressed that all materials required for the monumental project, which is taking place 50 years after the first bridge was built across the River, had been imported and on site while the piles that will carry the pillars of the concrete bridge are already being driven into place on the river. Jonathan told Nigerians that considering the extent of work done so far, which includes the completion of the bridge design, environmental impact assessment, soil test, arrival of all specialized materials, full mobilization of Julius Berger to site, commencement of piling and the commitment of the financiers and the Federal Government among others, he was assuring Nigerians that the bridge will be delivered in record 48 months time as earlier promised. In a press conference after the Presidential tour of the facility, the Minister of Works, Arc. Mike Onolememen, stated that on completion, the facility will have a multiplier effect on the economy of the nation, open up economic arteries within the neighbouring states and further improve the financial capacity of those living along the corridor. He added that it is obvious that Nigerians will only begin to appreciate the mega project when they begin to see the pillars of the bridge springing out of the River and perhaps the 11.9KM 6 lane approach roads on both ends of the bridge. He remarked that what has been achieved so far is not a child’s play but one that needs to be commended and appreciated. The construction of the bridge was awarded to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc who has promised to deliver a world-class infrastructure with the utilization of cutting-edge technologies. President Jonathan was accompanied by the Former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi and the PDP National Chairman, Adamu Muazu.
