FEEDING YOUR SOUL If you were stranded on a deserted island, what one possession would you want with you? If you’re like many people, you may have answered “the Bible.” Why? Because we value it as the Word of God, and we know that if we’re alone and in turmoil, the Bible is the one book that would bring us spiritual comfort. But that is a “what if” scenario. In reality, our actions show something very different. We so easily neglect the Word of God, forgetting it is even there. And when we do read God’s Word, it’s a rushed process. Why is it that the one book we would choose above all others is the last one on our bookshelves to be read? Throughout the Bible we learn of humanity’s rebellion and how it was met with God’s redemption. The Old Testament tells us that Christ is coming, and the New Testament tells us that He is here. Each time we read a passage in the Bible, we should study it in light of God’s overall plan of salvation and the work of the Messiah. We need the Bible—not only to learn of God’s redemption, but to grow in our relationship with Him. The Word of God is the only food that can feed our souls. Scripture tells us, “Man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord” (Deuteronomy 8:3). Many of God’s children are spiritually malnourished because they are neglecting their spiritual food. No matter how busy you find yourself, spend time in God’s Word today. Do not worry about all the seemingly urgent demands of the moment—rest in His promises and reflect on His Truth. Prayer: Father, thank You for Your Word. Help me to remember the importance of it. Help me to take time every day to study Your Word. Amen. “Jesus answered, ‘It is written: “Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God”’” (Matthew 4:4).
