FILM SCREENING (in HD) SAFETY LAST! (USA 1923, Fred C. Newmeyer, Sam Taylor) SHERLOCK JR. (USA 1924, Buster Keaton) – THURSDAY, JANUARY 15TH, 6 P.M., R24 While Charlie Chaplin is a well-known figure even to only casually interested filmgoers, the other two geniuses of silent comedy, Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton, deserve a boost in popularity. Chaplin certainly was an astute choreographer and performer of physical comedy, but what he excelled at was the marriage of pathos and humor. Lloyd and Keaton, however, were the masters of acrobatic thrill comedy. Their personas of the bespectacled everyman and the stoic stoneface respectively are repeatedly thrown into absurdly dangerous scenarios which they master alternatively with unexpected physical grace and skill or sheer blind luck. In their cinematic quest for ever more refined and technically ambitious situations of awe-inspiring peril they have given us iconic images of people hanging from tower clocks or narrowly escaping head-on train collisions. But most importantly, these two slapstick extravaganzas make for two hours of unabashed fun, and yes, HD makes a difference for silent films.
