FINANCIAL DISCIPLINE An elephant in your wallet is how the advertisement for a credit card by my bankers went. It was a very enticing promotion with a promise to purchase whatever you wanted and pay later at no extra charge. So I jumped in and signed up for the deal. I was a young man, newly employed in early 1990s and thought to myself that having an elephant instead of a dik dik is a better way of managing my life. What happened thereafter is an experience that I have never forgotten. I did not really go on a spending spree but with time I realized I was falling behind in servicing my financial obligations with the bank. And so the elephant became too big to fit in my wallet and I regretted why I ever signed up for it. This is what happens when we lack financial discipline. I have learnt over the years the need to be contented with what I have. Contentment does not mean you have all you desire, it basically means that you live within your means. If you are living big but limping with financial burdens because of lack of self control, then it is the high time you sat back and re-evaluated your spending patterns. We are expected to work hard and well, spend wisely and save intelligently. The reason we find ourselves in one financial crisis after another is because we are ignorant about finances and always think turning to God due to our indiscipline will help. We form the habit of impulsive buying, poor planning, bad investments and heavy borrowing. As we begin this day, let us evaluate our revenue streams, do away with extravagant lifestyles that do not fit within our revenue brackets and live within our means. You cannot impress people for long, soon you will be exposed. Now you know.
