FISH STORIES............ 2. On being a fish expert I had to go to Kumta, a nearby town and live with my relatives for my high school education, as there was no high school in my village then. I was 13 and one of my tasks was to go to bazaar, more than a mile away and buy groceries and other needs. A household bicycle was at my disposal. It was a big trill and excitement to ride a bike at that age. Buying groceries and vegetables was fine. When it came to buying fish I was totally helpless. I could not make out whether the fish was fresh or stale. I knew that I have to check its gills. But I could not tell whether they are red or not. I am colorblind and I did not know that then! The irony was that everybody in the house considered me as a fish expert coming from Kodkani which is famous for fresh fish. Alas, what did I know about fish then?? At home, in Kodkani, we used to get fresh fish delivered directly from fishermen. So there was no question of fish being not fresh. I dreaded buying fish in Kumta’s fish market every time; my assumed reputation was at stake but there was no escape. Pricing and bargaining was another challenge. So I used logic. The logic was that the fisherwoman who won’t budge on price must be having fresh fish. I bought that fish from her, I told I paid lesser or market amount, paid the difference from my pocket to keep my reputation and made everybody happy!
