PreS-Gr 2–Magical words and pictures capture the essence and mystery of a carnival and a first trip on a Ferris wheel. “Are we big enough this year, Mama?/Are we brave enough, Brother?/Sister, are you ready to fly?” There’s cotton candy, a giddy sense of daring and anticipation, and at last the Ferris wheel, which morphs throughout into a growing garden, a washing machine, dandelion fuzz, bath tubs plunging into the water, and more while the people below look like “dancing jellybeans.” Beguiling candy colors, lines, and shapes play marvelously in the well-designed pages. In the end, the siblings declare they have flown, “fuzzy with the Ferris wheel feeling/Now and forever a part of the sky.” Unique and joyous, this is a treat for all imaginative, dreamy spirits who love a good ride.–Julie Roach, Cambridge Public Library, MA
