FLYING BACK FROM THE BEGINNING OF SPACE - our next big thing!!! After the overwhelming success of last years balloon to space project, our 5 very best MEng students from Computer Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering and Aviation Engineering have teamed up and under the guidance of Dr. Banitsas and Dr. Jabbal are planning something much more challenging. They will design and build a UAV which will be lifted into the stratosphere by a weather balloon, and following release, will fly itself back to the landing site. The UAV will carry a HD camera that will record and transmit live video from the aircraft to the ground station, along with real time flight parameters, and subsequently webcast this to every device following this in real time. Furthermore, the same payload will carry a scientific experiment to measure the ozone absorption in the near-UV spectrum and provide some unique data to our physicists here at Brunel. This is a cutting edge project, aiming to bring together research in many areas- including UAV regulation in UK airspace, and the challenges of integrating UAV operations with manned air traffic, examining the flight physics of tail-less, blended body aircraft at high altitudes, and the challenges involved with operating a data link, and video link across such large distances. Soon we will have dedicated web page where you can follow our path up until the launch day...and beyond!
