#FOCUS•TUC Mobilises To Protest Minimum Wage.Read more here>>> The President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Bala Gaigama has said that the removal of national minimum wage by the Senate is a decision made in error, saying organized labour are on the stage of mobilizing to kick against the decision. He stated this in a telephone interview with LEADERSHIP while reacting to the decision of the Senate on minimum wage on Wednesday. According to him, “TUC and organized labour is against the decision of the Senate. The law stipulates that all employer of labour must be entitled to it and I see it as a decision made in error. We are at the stage of mobilizing our people to kick against it”. On his part, President, Association of Senior Staff of Bankers, Insurance and Financial Institutions, Comrade Sunday Salako opined that the government of the day is not willing to do anything which results in the Senate decision. He said, “Government has abdicated its responsibility and thrown them at the citizens because people pay to rehabilitate the roads and some other things, while government finds it difficult to provide stable power, quality education and drinkable water for the citizens”. According to him, “You will agree with me that education should be the right of every child in the country but we pay heavily and Nigerians have to travel to Ghana, Togo and other countries to get quality education for their children. Even at home, we spend huge amount of money on fuel because we have epileptic power supply. “Also, people have to dig wells before getting water to drink and we also pay tax for government to fix good roads, so you ask me what is the essence of having government? It is the citizens taking care of government instead of them taking care of us. “They have abdicated their responsibility and thrown them at us. So, that is why the Senate made the move to remove the minimum wage from the exclusive to the current list and don’t be surprised that tomorrow ,states will also tell us that they are not aware of it. This shows how unserious the government can be. Even when the minimum wage is on the exclusive list, how many states complied,? he querried.
