FOOD FOR THOUGHT. What sign showeth thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? ************************************************************* Why believe? (1) Why should we believe that Jesus is the Son of God? How can we know that His claim to absolute authority is justified and that He is truly the sole way to approach God? Jesus Christs contemporaries demanded proofof His divine power in the form of signs, and He performed miracles that none other could do (cf. ch.3 v.2). Consequently, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles. Now notice Jesus remarkable reaction: Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, ... he knew what was in man (John 2, 23-24). Then Lord knew that faith that is based only on signs is neither genuine nor constant. That is why He reproached them: Except ye see signs and wonders, ye wll not believe (ch.4, v.48). Ch.6, v.2 tell us that a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased. But in v. 30 they demanded further signs! Impressive signs may direct attention towards Christ and influence both our reason and our emotions for a time. But the important decisions of life are made deep down in the heart. If mans heart is not convinced of the truth, there is no room for a living faith in Christ. We may take note of the proofs of Christs deity, but without a sincere acknowledgement of Christs claims on us we are just like that multitude, of whom it was finally said: Though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him (ch. 12, v.37). (to be concluded tomorrow)
