FOOTBALL PREVIEW Cody takes on Douglas tonight By SCOTT ALLEN Staff writer Cody – 1-0 after an exhilarating 46-20 win in its home opener over Buffalo – has its work cut out for it Friday as the Broncs get ready to take on Douglas. Douglass No. 1 quarterback may be out and in his place could be a sophomore. The team is coming off of a heartbreaking 18-17 loss to Powell, last year’s state champ. Head coach Jay Rhoadess 0-1 Bearcats will be tough – they have a quick-pass, no-huddle offense and a ground-and-pound defense. Hopefully we will use our speed to overcome (Codys) size, Rhoades said. They have some big guys and we plan to play fast and physical to overcome them. We expect to go out and win every play, whether its on offense or defense. You have to be able to play on both sides of the ball. Brothers Hunter and Colter Haman, both seniors, are powerhouse players who will have an outcome-deciding effect on the game. Hunter is the wide receiver and cornerback and Colter is a running back and middle linebacker. It looks to be a battle of brothers, with Douglas’s Haman brothers against Cody’s Myers brothers – Carter and Cameron. The Cody brothers are both linebackers and running backs. Another key player for Douglas is Bay Parks, a 5-foot-10, 205-pound defensive end and fullback who had a touchdown last week against the Panthers. The offensive game plan Douglas does is a fast running game. Cody will look to speed the tempo up, like Powell did last week, to get a win. The Broncs’ players say they’re ready for anything. The game will showcase Cody’s explosive offense against the Bearcats’ stifling defense. “We will be prepared for the game and I believe we can get a win,” Cody junior quarterback Blake Hinze said. Hinze’s teammate, Bronc senior receiver Noah Rivera, also is thinking positive. “I feel like we can do well and get a win out of it,” he said. Cody lost its match-up with Douglas last year, 35-9, at Douglas. Cody also lost the year before at home, 15-10. Cody head coach Matt McFadden considers Douglas a formidable opponent – again. “They’re a disciplined team and they’re going to have a balanced attack with a good zone rushing game and a great sprint-out play-action passing game, so we’re going to have to prepare for some speed. They have some fast kids,” he said. A fact going in the Broncs’ favor is that Douglas’s starting quarterback, Haize Weber, may miss Friday’s game due to an appendectomy surgery he had Tuesday. Or – he may start. As of right now we dont know. Haize could be starting the game. If he doesnt, his backup will be playing, Rhoades said. In Haizes place at QB-1, if Haize is unable to play because he is not ready to come back from surgery, the Bearcats may start sophomore 6-foot-1, 145-pound Ty Larson. That decision will be made at game time, depending on how Haize feels, Rhoades said. Kickoff at Cody’s football field is 6 p.m. Friday. (Scott Allen can be reached at scott@codyenterprise.)
