CHIBOK GIRLS WASSCE RESULT READY The Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, said on Monday that the May/June 2014 West African Senior School Certificate Examination results of the abducted Chibok schoolgirls were ready. The over 200 girls were abducted in April when members of the Boko Haram sect invaded the Government Secondary School, Chibok in Borno State. Their whereabouts remain unknown over 154 days after the sad incident. The students were taking their examinations when the sect members interrupted the exercise. He was responding to a question by a member of the committee, who sought to know the fate of the girls. The minister, who assured the committee that the Federal Government had not lost hope in its bid to secure the release of the girls, added that efforts were also being made to improve on girl child education generally in the North-East zone. 2.POWER MUST CHANGE HANDS The federal government is considering the sale of the assets of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) put at $20 billion, which are being managed by Manitoba Hydroelectric of Canada under a three-year management contract that will end by next year. The Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, told Bloomberg Television Africa that the sale of TCN might start “in a few years”. “The interest now for transmission is over $20 billion. People are coming from everywhere,” Nebo said. After selling the 11 distribution and six generation companies unbundled from the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), the government retained ownership of TCN, where it is injecting $3.5 billion to boost capacity by 50 per cent. 3. MUTINY VERDICT DELIVERED The Nigerian Army has sentenced 12 of the 18 soldiers on a six-count charge for being involved in an alleged mutiny in May 14, when some aggrieved troops opened fire at a car carrying the Commanding Officer 7 Division in Maiduguri, Borno State, Maj-Gen. Ahmadu Mohammed. While 14 of the accused were found guilty under different counts, four of them were discharged and acquitted of all charges.charged with Court-Martial to death by firing squad, while one was sentenced to 28 days with Imprisonment with Hard Labour (IHL). Five others were set free. According to the sentence delivered by the President of the General Court Martial trying the 18 soldiers, Brig-Gen. Chukwuemeka Okonkwo, Corporal Jasper Braidolor and 10 others were found guilty of Counts 1,2 and 3 and were sentenced to death by firing squad. After the ruling, Okonkwo said that these sentences are subject to confirmation, meaning that it can be appealed at the Federal Court of Appeal. 4. 2015 ELECTIONS As part of efforts to strengthen the security of the electoral processes in the country and ensure sustainable democracy and national development, the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba, has set up the Elections Security Planning and Monitoring Unit. The Unit which is headed by a Commissioner of Police in the Department of Operations, will be responsible for development of frameworks, processes, strategies and systems necessary for election security, planning, monitoring and management. *In other INEC news, three employees of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Anambra State, have been charged before the Magistrate Court 2, Atani, for stealing permanent voters cards meant for some communities in Ogbaru Local Government Area. All the PVCs, according to the charge, for Akili-Ogidi/Obeagwe ward, where the member representing Ogbaru in the House of Representatives, Mr. Victor Afam Ogene hails from are missing.
