FRANKLY SPEAKING with Ken Mcphail This morning, my friend who is a practising medical Doctor was chatting me through BBM, he told me that NMA is 100% right in their recent strike action, even in the midst of an epidemic like Ebola, and that GEJ led FG is very insensitive to sack all resident doctors at this time. Well, I told him that they have my sympathy, but I dont think thats the way the ordinary Nigerian they claim to be helping sees all these things, he then concluded by sending me the message shown as posted below; The greatest emotion should be empathy, not sympathy. It should be Professional and impersonal, not informal and personal. Where finances are involved, its either you have your money or go to Government to heal you. I went through great lengths for my training which my parents paid for (it was not free). I spent over 6 years in University while most others spent 4, with a few spending 5. My counter-parts abroad who obtained loans to train are still paying off their loans years after graduation. Even after graduating, I will spend years training myself to become a specialist. If we were to go by your principles that those in these categories are students and should not be paid, then a Doctor would be well over 40 years (or 45 depending on the specialty) before he earns his first salary, but I know common sense is not common. My Reaction::: Well, after reading through this, I shook my head heavily and simply told him, I have over 54 close medical doctors today who are either relatives and/or friends, including him. I have been very understanding of all they tried to present as their reasons for embarking on their recent strike action, but with this his message, I saw a complete ego-based reasons, nothing humanitarian there. Please, before you bark me down, lets be reasonable here; 1. Doctors went through 6 years of training in the University and were trained by their parents, while others spent 4 years or 5 at most and were trained by their ancestors abi?...... Ok. 2. If going by principles, that those resident doctors should not be paid, then a doctor should be well over 40yrs or 45yrs (depending on his specialty) before he earns a salary..............nawa o!............. Are these doctors aware that for other disciplines in Nigeria, once you are done with your degree and NYSC, the government has no business with you?.......abi na their birth right? Biko, ejoo, please, its time we call a spade a spade. I have no beef with doctors because I have a life which am happily living, am only a Nigerian who feels the plight of the ordinary masses. If the above summation is your mentality, desist from it. We all attended Universities and deserve same level of ground, thats fair play. If you are on government payroll and you keep going on strike at every little provocation, the Government has the right to deal with you accordingly. Funny enough, even at the level which the NMA vs FG saga has reached, this doctors are still on strike. THey said to FG, no shaking! #NsogbuDi.
