The video, seen above, raises some important questions about the role of welfare, particularly multi-generational welfare, in America today. It begins with an eye-opening interview with Kiara, a 30-year-old woman with four children, who supports her lifestyle entirely through welfare. welfareKiara say she “feels comfortable” not having a job, since she gets a check every month. She admits to having sold her food stamps for 60 cents on the dollar to get additional cash. For the average hard-working American, it is infuriating to watch her interview, but it is also profoundly sad. She is articulate, attractive, and of at least average intelligence. What might she accomplish in her life – what might she contribute to the world – if she utilized her potential? What is she teaching her children? According to an article published by the National Center for Policy Analysis, 29.3 percent of welfare recipients are second generation, and a jaw-dropping 7.5 percent are the third generation in their family to receive benefits. Will the children of today’s welfare recipients be the fourth generation in their families to live on the goodwill of their fellow citizens without contributing in any meaningful way to the society that supports them? Welfare also undermines the integrity of families. In her interview, Kiara says she lost her spot in government housing because a boyfriend was found to be living with her. The article cited above continues: One of the biggest problems with welfare…is the perverse incentives it gives recipients to have children — arguably the underclass’ largest problem. While women do not get pregnant just to get welfare benefits, removing the economic consequences of out-of-wedlock births takes away a major incentive to avoid them. More than three-fourths of more than 20 major studies on welfare recipients show a significant link between benefit levels and out-of-wedlock childbearing. Great minds have long pondered the best way to help the poor without disempowering them. Ronald Reagan said: “Welfare’s purpose should be to eliminate, as far as possible, the need for its own existence.” And at the very inception of our republic, Benjamin Franklin wrote: I am for doing good to the poor, but… I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. I observed…that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer. https://youtube/watch?v=1SLnAMg8rOA&feature=player_embedded#t=3 . . .
