FRIENDSHIP is a dangerous game. Like Nigerian politics, it could be very dirty. You never know with friends. With at least, knows what to expect. You never can tell when a friend would turn around and stab you in the back. In picking friends, one has certain virtues in mind; perhaps the most important of which are trust, confidence and loyalty. A friend is supposed to be someone with whom you share good and bad times. Someone, who like the Biblical rock of Gibraltar, would stand by you in times of need and vice-versa. Truly, a friend in need is a friend in deed. But this is not always the case. There are good time friends; fair weather friends, who would only flock around you when things are rosy and who in the same vein, would simply vaporize when the going becomes tough. An elderly friend once tried to rationalize this. In his exact words, “when your palms drip with honey, multitudes would flock around and lick it with you, but when that same palm drips with blood, not a single person would join in the feast.” But should it be so? Should friends abandon one in trying times? I have suffered my own fair share of betrayals, envy, disappointment and shock in the hands of enemies who came to me as friends. I have, even in recent times, scarified my all to friends, only for those same friends to launch and intensify a campaign of calumny against me. Friends had in the past, willingly granted me favors, only for those same friends to turn around and tell the whole world that I couldn’t survive without their support. Just as there’s a very tenuous line between love and hate, so is there a very thin line between friendship and enmity. I have watched best friends became worst enemies for reasons too numerous to be adequately mentioned here. What do you say to a man who snatched his best friends’ girl and attempted to justify it before the world? What do you say to one who out of envy, plots diabolically the downfall of a successful friend?. What indeed do you say to a friend who is consumed with so much envy and hypocrisy that he begins to plan to murder a friend? The instances, like I mentioned earlier on are too numerous to be recounted here.
