FROM DOREEN They both nodded and walked to the end of the mall, past the empty spot where the Orange Julius used to be. Norma’s Nails was the last store before the Shop Here Pay Here. Old Jeremiah Jackson, an old one-eyed black man with white hair, owned the store and he always had the best bargains in town. She had a great rapport with him and always told Jeremiah that he was as old as The Civil War and he would gush out with his contagious, genuine laughter. Last year Jeremiah had finally gotten a set of dentures that replaced the wide gap he had sported for at least a decade. She would have to stop and say hello before they went home to see if he had any good bargains. But first, the nail salon. Norma ran the nail salon and provided the best entertainment in town. She and her assistant, Sissy, always had the best gossip to share. Doreen glanced down at her watch and griped, “Shit. I’m late for my appointment.” “It’s Monday morning, how busy could they be?” asked Crystal. She opened a pack of cigarettes and enjoyed a quick smoke on the way to the salon. Doreen opened the door to Norma’s and immediately, Sissy screamed. “Girrrrrrrrrl. You is late!” Sissy was a tall, black woman with a striking blonde weave and gaudy jewelry. “I know, I know. Sorry. Got tied up at the store,” apologized Doreen pointing to the couple of bags of groceries hanging from the stroller. “Had to take Maureen first….ok….it’ll be just a few minutes….have a seat” said Norma. “Oh, you brought the baby! She’s so big!!!” exclaimed Norma. “Look at those lips! She looks like she’s wearing lipstick!” “Ho-ho” Scarlett screamed out. “Ho-ho-ho-ho” The women burst into laughter. Finally Norma spoke up. “Does that little girl know me?” which sent the women into another fit of laughter.
