FROM THE DAV ...HERE WE GO AGAIN!! Confrontation Building Between White House And Congress - NPR Talk of a shutdown is percolating again on Capitol Hill... - ABC News Could the immigration fight cause another government shutdown? - CBS News If youve watched the news coming out of Washington over the past week youve read or heard that a showdown between the President and Congress could once again lead to another government shutdown. You probably remember the government shutdown last year that forced VA to close its doors to veterans applying for disability compensation, pension, education and vocational rehabilitation benefits. Had that shutdown continued for another couple of weeks, even disabled veterans who rely on VA benefits would have seen their checks cut off. And even if this new partisan, political fight doesnt lead to a shutdown, the budget for veterans programs and benefits is already being held in limbo as a continuing resolution is set to run out on December 11th, the 23rd time in 26 years that VAs full budget is late. Enough is enough! As you may know, DAV and a coalition of Americas leading veterans and military service organizations have been pushing Congress all year to pass legislation that would shield all veterans programs, services and benefits through advance appropriations. In fact, both the Senate and the House overwhelmingly approved bipartisan legislation last year, the Putting Veterans Funding First Act (S. 932 / H.R. 813) that would do just that, however neither the Senate nor the House has brought up that legislation for a floor vote. But just last month, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid made a promise to hold a vote on S. 932 before the end of the year, and we need your help to make sure that the Senate holds that vote and that the legislation passes. Using the prepared letter, please contact your Senators to request that they support the advance appropriations legislation (S. 932), and that they let Majority Leader Reid and Minority Leader McConnell know that this vital legislation must be brought to the Senate floor and allowed an up-or-down vote before the end of the year.
