FROM THE NEWSROOM: A contract has been ratified by the Para-Professionals Union giving the Thompson Board of Education the green light to hire four new part-time para-professionals for its Kindergarten classrooms. Because they are part-time positions, benefits will not be offered, and the contracts will run until June 30, 2017. The Board has also filled the position of part-time Assistant Principal for the Elementary School. Dr. Michael Jolin, Superintendent of Schools, says that the much needed positions were cut approximately four years ago. He said it is a “major step forward for the Board of Education.” Principal of the Elementary School Noveline Beltram highlighted the need for paraprofessionals in the Kindergarten classrooms, equating lone teacher to one person hosting a birthday party for 18 four and five year old children, some not potty trained – all the while getting them ready for first grade. In addition, Tina Chahanovich has been hired as a part-time Assistant Principal for the elementary school. She will also remain on as a part-time reading teacher. A long time Thompson Middle and Elementary School educator, she was unanimously recommended to Dr. Jolin, the Board of Education and a search committee of teachers, a parent, and para-professionals. Her focus at the start of school will be on security, maintaining the high morale at the school, and “encouraging the wonderful intervention programs which are already in place.” Tune in for the full report.
