FROM THE NEWSROOM: As the current legislative session heads toward a close in Hartford, Northeastern Conn. elected officials say the state budget is the main priority. Democratic State Representative Danny Rovero says that he does not think that the numbers for the states expected surplus are as good as initially touted. The Governors office has backed off on earlier estimates that originally put the surplus near $500 million. “Everybody talks about the large surplus were going to have and about giving back a tax refund, and I honestly dont think were going to see the revenue surplus that theyre talking about,” said Rovero. He says any surplus should be put in the rainy day fund for next years budget, which he says is projected to see a $1 billion shortfall. Republican Senator Tony Guglielmo says that state spending is out of control. “We spent $400 million the other night and we gave it to [the United Technologies Corporation], and I have a lot of UTC employees in my district, but I couldnt vote for that,” said Guglielmo. “Thats picking winners and losers. Theres so many other needs, and when you borrow that money – obviously you have to pay it back, and when you pay it back it costs interest.” Rovero said the state needs to stop spending money it doesnt have; he says officials need to get the budget in line, adding that he worries that upcoming generations will be in debt for the rest of their lives. Tune in for the full report.
