FROM THE NEWSROOM: For one day in September, Davis Park will be transformed into the Great Killingly Tomato Festival, which Director of Planning and Development Linda Walden says will contain a wealth of fun, music and information, all while celebrating the ever-popular fruit. The festival will be presented alongside “Killingly Cooks”, the Killingly Business Association Craft and Health Fair, Frito-Lay Community Services Day, the Northeast CT Farmers Market and the Killingly Parks and Recreation’s Tomato Festival 5K. “It’s going to be bigger and better than last year.” says Walden, who listed off a number of activities including crafts, face painting, and a scavenger hunt. There will also be multiple contests, including one for local restaurants, which will have their tomato appetizers or entrées tried by celebrity judges. However, the question remains: why tomatoes? Walden says that the focus on tomatoes came from the idea to give attention to locally grown produce, along with the fact that there is no other festival in the state with a focus on the little red fruit. The festival will take place from 9am-4pm on September 13, and will feature informational booths, which can provide information on tomatoes, as well as general gardening advice. The Farmer’s Market will also be relocating to Davis Park for the day of the event.
