FROM THE NEWSROOM: GOVERNOR-CONNECTICUT-INDEPENDENT PARTY Foley wins Connecticut Independent Party backing HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Foley has won the endorsement of the Independent Party of Connecticut, securing a second spot on the November ballot. Foleys campaign confirmed the Greenwich businessman won the third partys endorsement at Tuesday nights party caucus. He defeated Trinity College Professor John Mertens, who argued the party should endorse a member rather than cross-endorse a major party candidate. Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has already received the cross-endorsement of the Working Families Party, ensuring that his name will appear twice on the Nov. 4 ballot. Malloys endorsement from the same group back in 2010 helped him defeat Foley in a narrow race. The Independent Party has been in flux for several years, due to an internal struggle over who actually controls the political organization.
