FROM THE NEWSROOM: (HARTFORD, CT)—The State Board of Education today appointed Kathleen Demsey as Acting Chief Financial Officer for the State Department of Education. Ms. Demsey assumes the role from Brian Mahoney, who is retiring after more than three decades of outstanding service to the Department. “Always a pleasure to work with, Mr. Mahoney was a consummate professional who faithfully served Connecticut with integrity and keen skill. Quite simply, he was one of the best. We offer him our sincerest congratulations on his retirement,” said State Board of Education Chairman Allan Taylor. “We welcome Ms. Demsey in her new position and we have the utmost confidence in her. She has a long record of exemplary work. Under her leadership, we can anticipate maintaining the Department’s high level of excellence and skill.” “Words cannot do justice to Mr. Mahoney’s contributions at the State Department of Education over these three decades. His wisdom and technical ability made him an invaluable leader in the Department. Though he will be greatly missed as a colleague, we wish him nothing but the very best in his retirement,” said Education Commissioner Stefan Pryor. “I believe we have identified a highly able and talented interim successor to serve as Acting Chief Financial Officer, Kathleen Demsey. Since her arrival to the Department, Ms. Demsey’s contributions have been integral to many key initiatives, including her recent service in the Sheff office. We look forward to the continued commitment to excellence she will bring to her new role.” Kathleen Demsey, a graduate of University of Connecticut (B.S.) and Quinnipiac University (M.B.A.), began her public service career in 1989 with the Office of Policy and Management (OPM). During her 16-year tenure with OPM, Ms. Demsey gained extensive experience developing, analyzing, and monitoring multi-billion dollar budgets, including the budgets for State Department of Education and the Connecticut Technical High School System, as well as projecting fiscal and programmatic impacts of policy changes. Since joining the State Department of Education in 2006, she has continued to lend her expertise to many key initiatives, including the management of grants related to Open Choice, Sheff, and charter schools.
