FROM THE NEWSROOM: If you get any suspicious calls from someone claiming to be an employee of Microsoft – or any other software company – officials from the Better Business Bureau of Central New England say, “hang up right away.” According to BBB President & CEO Nancy Cahalen, a regional scam where a caller alerts people to fabricated computer viruses, and offers to remove them, has been picking up steam throughout the area. The way the scam works is the caller offers to help fix the computer by giving instructions, but following those instructions wont remove a virus – it will allow the scammer to install malicious software giving them remote access to your computer and its files, including your personal and financial information. Cahalen explained that Microsoft and its partners do not make unsolicited phone calls to consumers, and you should report any suspected phone scammers to the BBB or your local police. If youre worried about viruses and malware, never trust cold calls – instead, go through your service provider directly to see if your computer is open to security threats, install virus protection software, or seek the services of a computer repair company. Tune in for the full report.
