FROM THE NEWSROOM: The State Department of Economic and Community Development has been authorized by Governor Dannel Malloy to offer millions of dollars in brown fields grants to cities and towns throughout the state. Municipalities have until mid-June to apply for a portion of the $20 million that will be awarded. John Filchak, Executive Director of the Northeastern Connecticut Council of Governments, says that each project is believed to have a cap of $4 million. Filchak says this is a good opportunity for towns to determine which sections in their towns are “unclean”, including former mill and industrial sites that have been left unusable. By remediating those areas, the state is hopeful the properties will become “productive” again, improving both the aesthetics and value of certain commercial areas. Municipalities have until mid-June to apply for a portion of this grant. Tune in for the full report.
