FROM THE NEWSROOM: (UPDATE) Republican candidate for the 29th District Senatorial seat John French this morning responded to criticism of a robo call his campaign released this week, that may have led to a flood of phone calls his opponent, Democrat Mae Flexer, received on her home phone number. Flexer, who says she was “unnerved” after receiving dozens of calls from one number in which no caller actually spoke, called state police, who traced the number to the French campaign. “This is a campaign tactic that has just gone a little bit too far. To be calling your opponents phone over and over again in that short a period of time is unacceptable campaign behavior and we deserve better than that,” she said to WINY. Frenchs campaign initially responded with a statement condemning harassment in general, but acknowledging his campaign had sent out the robo call that allowed constituents to connect directly to Flexers phone number in order to voice their concerns about her record. Responding on the WINY Talk Show to allegations that hes running a negative campaign, French said the Democrats have attacked him with a mailer highlighting the bankruptcy of a former business he owned more than a decade ago. Democrats also filed a complaint about his campaign this week that the State Election Enforcement Commission declined to investigate. “You know, if you look at especially a flyer that came out yesterday attacking my previous business and everything else – shes out there and shes going ahead and saying how Im harassing her, but yet she basically attacked me and my family...that went through a tough time back in the late [1990s],” said French. “Nobodys discussing that. Everybodys discussing that Im harassing her.” French defended the robo call as a “normal, political situation thats out there” and said the Democrats have been equally negative in their campaigning against him, which he says has gone under the radar. Tune in to WINY.
