Private owners who use elephants for tourist safaris have been illegally smuggling elephants into the country for years. In the past, the government of Nepal has turned a blind eye to the smuggling. Bringing elephants from any other nations is illegal and if any entrepreneurs are found doing so then actions will be taken against them. During the program organized on the occasion of 3rd Elephant Day in Sauraha the chief warden of Chitwan National Park Mr. Kamal Jung Kunwar warned against the smuggling of elephants from India. There are 60 privately owned elephants in Sauraha and among them some are brought in from India. According to Mr. Kunwar in the new rule and regulation for the management of the elephants, import from India has been mentioned as illegal. In the wildlife conservation Act 2029 it has been mentioned that import of elephants from other nations is illegal but even so the local entrepreneurs have been bringing the elephants from India. Elephants are important for the conservation of other wildlife like tigers and one rhinos as well. There are about 145 wild elephants in Nepal and double of that number is of the privately owned elephants. According to the national park’s ranger Mr. Birendra Roka in the past 5 years about 26 elephants have died due to various reasons.
