Facebook is seriously interfering with my academic output. I can scarcely do hard thinking. I spend more time on phone than tv. I rarely use my laptop these days. I cant remember the last time I read a book. I no longer have dealings with newspaper vendors. I have never written a newspaper article since 2014. Even academic articles are beginning to look like punishment. My grammar is deteriorating. I used to be a novel a day man. What has happened to me? I am now more of an intellectual consumer than producer. Theres no gansaying that Facebook promotes intellectual consumerism. I cant deny that Facebook has given me a lot but it has equally taken a lot from me. I found love on Facebook. I found profound friendship on Facebook. I met interesting persons on facebook. Facebook gave me opportunity to identify with worthy causes. Facebook gave me a lot. But I have always wanted to make something of a Woke Soyinka out of myself. I have always wanted to leave an intellectual mark on the world. I have the platform. I have the tools. Alas! Facebook is seducing me with intellectual hedonism. Facebook is bribing me with mental laziness. Sure, it takes energy to write. But Facebook gives a seductive intellectual coolness that relaxes rather than tax the brain. I do not want to belong in the intellectually unproductive generation. It is on this note that I say good bye. Good bye my friends. Good bye my loves. This account will soot be deactivated.
