Fact 8: Tourette Syndrome is something very little people know - TopicsExpress

Fact 8: Tourette Syndrome is something very little people know about. It is the disability associated with obscene exclamations, however, this makes up a very small minority. For most people, symptoms include tics that are small (e.g. rapid-eye blinking, shoulder-shrugging, facial-grimacing) or large (e.g. body twisting, hopping); and/or vocalizations (e.g. throat clearing, sniffing, grunting). It is reported that 2% of the population has Tourette syndrome, but this a conservative estimate, as most symptoms are so mild. It is reported that 19% of children in regular education classes and 23% of special education classes have tics. On the other hand, for those with more intense symptoms, life with Tourette syndrome can be very difficult. If you want a heart-wrenching story about a person with Tourette syndrome and the issue of over-drugging, read, Against Medical Advice by James Patterson and Hal Friedman
