Falkirk Fury Basketball Club about an hour ago 86-48 WIN AS FURY MEN GO 3 FROM 3 A 38 point win for the defending Scottish League Mens Champions – Clark Eriksson Fury kept their season unbeaten and now only the Falkirk side, Glasgow Storm – who defeated the Stirling Knights and Boroughmuir Blaze who defeated the Edinburgh Kings by 14 are the only clubs with a 100% record. Point guards Scott Russell on 17 and Jonny Bunyan on 15 paced Fury with excellent contributions from all the team in Glasgow. What was more impressive Fury were without 3 potential starters – centres Roni Gordon and Stu Mckay and Lithuanian guard Tomas Venslauskas, and had a number of other players of their 20 man squad unavailable for selection with injuries. Junior Fraser Malcolm had an excellent senior debt with 10 points. Fury had no fewer than 8 players on the scoresheet by the end of the first quarter with all 10 hitting the court in that opening stanza. A 22-13 lead was built after a poor start that saw the Glasgow side open with their usual up tempo game gaining an early lead. However the Champions tightened up their defence and playing good team offence took a deserved 9 point lead in to the second quarter. A 26 -6 Fury run gave them a convincing 48-19 half time lead. Full credit to the Rocks who never gave up on the match and took the third 20-19 with the Falkirk side ensuring all their team saw court time. Point guard Scott Russell, Latvian Martins Malnieks and 17 year old junior Fraser Malcolm were the key scorers in the third. The final period saw a 19-9 Fury scoreline and saw Malcolm continue to get valuable court time and put points on the board along with the hard working Greg Foussas and Jonny Bunyan. Overall this was a solid win for the Falkirk side whose 10 players on duty all received double minute court time. With only 11 turnovers and 20 assists Fury were rarely troubled in the back court but their execution on offence, despite scoring 86 points was not as good percentage wise as their opening two games. 65% from the line was reasonable and Fury Headcoach John Bunyan told Heraldsport it was another important win. ‘ Any road trip can present problems and the Rocks while a bit undersized as we actually were in the game always play well in transition and you have to be ready to combat that. We did a good job in that respect and the win keeps us at the top of the league. Martins Malnieks showed in the game what he can bring to the team and Fraser Malcolm had an excellent game. Despite being several key players down the team responded well and continue as a group to work at playing good team basketball – sharing the ball and working hard on the boards. From a defensive perspective we produced two quarters where we held the Rocks to single figure scoring and that is a target we go after in every quarter of every game”. QUARTER SCORES 13-22 6 -26 20-19 9-19 Top scorers Scott Russell 17 Jonny Bunyan 15 Walter Lubeigt 11 Fraser Malcolm 10 Most Efficient Player Greg Foussas with 9 rebounds, 7 points, 6 steals and 3 blocked shots.
