Kosovans have the right the decide their destiny. - USA: perfectly understandable. - Russia: ludicrous. South Ossetians and Abkhazians have the right to decide their destiny. - Russia: obviously. - UK and USA: certainly not. Chechnyans have the right to decide their destiny. - UK and USA: obviously. - Russia: certainly not. Russian Ukranians have the right to decide their destiny. - Russia: clearly. - US and UK: nonsense. Taiwanese have the right to decide their destiny. - US: naturally. - China: rubbish. Gibraltarians have the right to decide their destiny. - UK: of course. - Spain: ridiculous. Scots have the right to decide their destiny. - UK: go ahead. - Rest of the world: What? Oh... eh, alright, I suppose. And so on! People complain about one side or another being hypocritical, but theyre politicians. Its what they do. Complaining about hypocrisy isnt always a productive approach. Its understandable, though, and these double standards make a mockery of governments claims to support liberty or democracy or self-determination when their principles conveniently flip from case to case. - Shane Leavy
